SUMMARY:Nature’s Apothecary with Margaret Willes
DESCRIPTION:In her recent book Nature’s Apothecary Margaret selected one hundred plants and showed how they have been used medicinally and socially over the centuries. Her talk will concentrate on a few of these\, with illustrations from John Gerard’s herbal of 1597. Gerard’s publisher\, John Norton\, was so delighted when he had printed copies that he had one hand coloured and presented it to Sir Thomas Bodley for his new library in Oxford. Some of these illustrations will accompany her talk. Some of the Gibson Library’s Herbals will be on display on the evening of the talk. \nMargaret was the Publisher for the National Trust until the organisation decided to relocate to Swindon\, and she decided to retire and to write books. Her first book was Reading Matters: Five Centuries of Discovering Books\, and books sit at the heart of her subsequent titles\, including A Shakespearean Botanical\, where the beauty of the playwright’s lines are married with exquisite illustrations from John Gerard’s herbal of 1597. More of these illustrations from Gerard’s herbal also feature in her most recent book\, Nature’s Apothecary.

SUMMARY:The Magician and his Library: The Story of John Dee\, by Rachel Morris
DESCRIPTION:Rachel Morris talked about her new book\, The Year of the Wizard\, a lyrical and highly atmospheric history of Renaissance magic. It is also – by an act of historical imagination – an account of the lives of the wives\, daughters and servants of the Magicians; and because John Dee had a spectacular library it is also the story of a 16th century book lover and how he built a library in turbulent times. \nRachel grew up not far from Saffron Walden. “Prior to writing The Years of the Wizard I wrote The Museum Makers\, which is part cultural history of museums\, part memoir of my bohemian family. And prior to that I worked in the cultural sector\, running a museum-making company called Metaphor with my partner Stephen Greenberg. The themes that run through all my books are fictional libraries\, renaissance history and magic\, early museums\, memory\, John Dee\, Jorge Luis Borges\, memoir writing and the history of story-telling.”

SUMMARY:A Manifesto\, or\, How to Build a Library\, by Ian Patterson
DESCRIPTION:The meeting was held in Saffron Walden Library on Wednesday 14th January at 7:30 pm\, when author Ian Patterson talked about his new publication\, Books: A Manifesto\, or\, How to Build a Library. This is a book about books and “the subversive power of reading and the strange\, enduring magic of books as objects”. \n“Ever since childhood books have been at the centre of Ian Patterson’s life\, as a poet\, teacher\, translator\, bookseller and collector. As he constructs the last of many libraries\, he makes an impassioned case for the radical importance of reading in our lives – from Proust to Jilly Cooper\, from golden age detective novels to avant-garde poetry.”

SUMMARY:Gardening and Reading in Tudor and Stuart England\, a talk by Dr Grace Murray in Saffron Walden Library
DESCRIPTION:Old herbals\, marginalia\, saffron cultivation and Tudor poet\, Gabriel Harvey of Saffron Walden will all be discussed in the next talk of the Gibson Library Society. \nIn the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries\, England’s printing presses churned out dozens of instructional manuals or ‘how-to’ books for the aspiring gardener or herbalist. This talk explored why these books were enduringly popular with Tudor and Stuart readers by turning to surviving copies with notes scribbled in the margins\, and shows that learning to garden was just one of many reasons why people read their how-to books. \nDr Grace Murray is a Lecturer in English Literature at Birkbeck\, University of London\, where she specialises in the history of reading in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. She is interested in how people throughout history have read and written about practical knowledge\, especially concerning plants. Grace assisted with research for the recent British Library exhibition Unearthed: The Power of Gardening\, and co-curated the ongoing National Trust exhibition Whispers of the Wilderness: Exploring Wilderness Gardens at Beningbrough Hall in North Yorkshire.

SUMMARY:Arts and Crafts Movement printing\, An illustrated talk by Perry Staker\, in Saffron Walden Library
DESCRIPTION:Perry has a long-standing interest in food history and social history\, and many members will recall her excellent talk about Twelfth Night. In 2018 she was invited to take on the role of the Victorian Cook in the BBC2 series ‘The Victorian House of Arts and Crafts’ shown in January 2019. This led to a developing interest in the Arts and Crafts Movement\, which has has more recently turned towards the influence of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement on printing. \nPerry is a lecturer and historian who lives in Thaxted. \nThis lecture coincided with an exhibition in the Library on Arts and Crafts printing\, which was strongly influenced by William Morris and Walter Crane. The exhibits featured books from the Library’s own collection\, including some that are available for loan after the exhibition finishes. The exhibition is open to the public between Saturday 13th September and Wednesday 1st October\, during Library opening times.

SUMMARY:Gibson Library Society Annual Outing: A Visit to the St Bride Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Just off Fleet Street\, in what was the heart of the British national press is the St Bride Foundation. It was set up in 1891 as an institution to support the people and printers of Fleet Street\, providing both education and recreation. It had a school of printing to educate printers in the newest technologies and an extensive library\, as well as more practical facilities such as a swimming pool (the first in the City of London)\, a gymnasium and washrooms for laundry. \nOn our two-hour tour we will visit the printing workshop\, the library and its other historic rooms. In the workshop we will be shown different printing techniques and the lengthy process of preparing a newspaper (before computerisation) for print. We will get a chance to view some treasures in the library’s special collection. The Foundation’s library\, originally created as a resource for printers\, today contains over 50\,000 items\, many of which are manuscripts including a substantial fragment of one of William Caxton’s earliest printed works. \nThe group size was limited to just 24 persons\, so please book early. \nClick here for the form\, which should printed off and returned to the Library.

SUMMARY:Gibson Library Society's AGM
DESCRIPTION:The AGM was followed by a talk on by Oscar Aldred on Sir Cyril Fox and the Archaeology of the Cambridge region. Sir Cyril Fox PhD FSA FBA MRIA (1882-1967) was an archaeologist and director of the National Museum of Wales\, who went up to Magdalene College\, University of Cambridge to read – as of then – Section B of the English Tripos in 1919. Extraordinarily\, Professor HM Chadwick\, his college tutor\, transferred Fox to read for a PhD after his first year. After completing his PhD in 1922\, Fox subsequently published it with few amendments in 1923 with Cambridge University Press. This is not remarkable in itself\, but it is rather that the topic of study which was highly regarded: the title of his dissertation and publication was ‘The Archaeology of the Cambridge Region’ (ACR). In ACR\, Fox outlined the basis for a landscape approach to archaeology\, that has formed the foundation for landscape archaeology. In this talk\, drawing on examples of Fox’s archaeological work from the Cambridge region and beyond\, I will examine what made Fox’s study significant\, and how it transformed our thinking about the past. \nOscar Aldred PhD FSA works for the Cambridge Archaeological Unit\, within the Department of Archaeology\, University of Cambridge\, and is a Member of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research and the Centre for Landscape Regeneration\, also at Cambridge. His main research interests are in landscape archaeology\, excavation\, the history of archaeology\, and archaeological method and theory. He specialises in later prehistory to post-medieval times\, and the archaeology of the North Atlantic and the UK. He is widely published\, including the book ‘The Archaeology of Movement’ (Routledge 2021) and an article in 2023 about the 100 year anniversary of Fox’s ACR in the Proceedings of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society (PCAS).

SUMMARY:Edward Charlesworth: Natural Scientist\, Curator\, Inventor\, Fossil Dealer\, Controversy - an illustrated talk by Dominic Davey
DESCRIPTION:Edward Charlesworth lived from 1813 to 1893 and participated in significant developments in the study of the natural sciences; being acquainted with and/or communicating with some of the leading natural scientists of the time. Charlesworth was a gifted and prolific geologist who published influential scientific papers and was made a fellow of the Geological Society while still in his twenties. He was a respected museum curator and expert in palaeontology enabling him to both act as a consultant to geological collectors and institutions and to make his living from the buying and selling of fossil collections. Many of his ventures were focused on East Anglia and he made significant contributions to museums in Norwich and Ipswich before settling in Saffron Walden towards the end of his life. \nDominic Davey:\nDominic grew up in Manchester and took a degree in geology at Swansea University. He spent his working life in the oil exploration business\, initially as a seismologist and then as an IT professional. Since retiring\, Dominic has rediscovered his enthusiasm for geology and is a member of a handful of local and national geological societies\, including the Gibson Library Society and the History of Geology Group. The gifting of the Edward Charlesworth archive to the Gibson Library\, by Professor Hugh Torrens\, presented a unique opportunity to study the life of a Victorian geologist who lived in a time of significant scientific\, and especially geological\, developments.

SUMMARY:Brightening from the East. The nonconformist landscapes of 20th century Essex\, by Author Ken Worpole
DESCRIPTION:In his new book\, Brightening from the East\, writer and social historian Ken Worpole explored a unique ‘region of the mind’ – the Thames Estuary\, the marshland landscapes of the East Anglian shoreline\, and the Quaker and Anglican strongholds of the Essex interior – where Essex has been fertile soil for a rich variety of radical and religious settlements\, ‘the Thaxted experiment’ being the most well-known. In his talk the author focused on the powerful mix of East End political radicalism\, the English Folk Revival\, and the Christian ‘leavening’ of rural Essex\, which all combined to produce some of the most remarkable episodes in the history of social reform in 20th century\, a number of which were discussed in greater detail. \nKen is the author of several books\, most recently No Matter How Many Skies Have Fallen: back to the land in wartime Britain (2021)\, New Jerusalem: the good city and the good society (2015) and Contemporary Library Architecture: a planning and design guide(2013).

SUMMARY:Agent Zo\, courageous Second World War resistance hero - An illustrated talk by Clare Mulley
DESCRIPTION:AGENT ZO tells the remarkable story of courageous resistance fighter Elzbieta Zawacka\, aka ‘Zo’\, the only female member of the Polish elite special forces\, the ‘Silent Unseen’\, and the only woman to parachute from Britain to Nazi-German occupied Poland during the Second World War. There\, while being hunted by the Gestapo\, who arrested her entire family\, she established an important intelligence network\, couriered microfilm across wartime borders\, and played a key role in the largest organised act of defiance against Nazi German occupation – the Warsaw Uprising. \nClare Mulley is an award-winning author focused on female experience during the Second World War. Her books include Agent Zo\, as well as The Women who flew for Hitler\, The Spy who loved and The woman who saved the children.

SUMMARY:Minutes of the 41st Annual General Meeting held at the Saffron Walden Library on Wednesday 15th May 2024 at 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:28 members and 2 non-members signed the attendance book. \n1. Apologies for absence\nApologies were received from: Judy Brook\, Dominic Davey\, Catherine Fiddick\, Lord Haslehurst\, Diana Hoy\, Clare Mulley\, David Pearl\, Tessa Pilsbury\, Judith Rodden\, Paul and Heather Salvidge\, Bernice Smith\, Margery Taylor and Bruce Tice. \n2. Minutes of the previous meeting\nMinutes of the 2023 AGM had been posted on the website. They were taken as read and were accepted as a true record. Proposed: John Oswin-Smith         Seconded: Gillian Mulley         Unanimously agreed.\nThere were no matters arising. \n3. Chairman’s Report:\nMartyn Everett’s report has been posted on the Society website. He highlighted the following to the AGM:\nTalks given by Martyn Everett (ME) and Kelly Cole to local Womens’ Institute groups\, and\, for the fifth year in a row\, visits to the Library made by around fifty A-level Geography students. These were followed by good feedback from the visitors and their organisers / teachers.\nA successful event for about fifteen local artists showcasing art-related books and material in the collection. He hopes that a second art-themed event can be organised in the near future and this could be a model for similar subject themed visits\, e.g. for literature\, history\, botanical and horticultural studies etc.\nUDC grants had enabled the purchase of audio-visual equipment\, some of which was being used for the first time at the AGM.\nThe support of the Gibson Walden Fund – The resumption of book-binding had been significantly delayed due to the retirement of our previous binder but he was hopeful this would now be resolved over the summer using the services of J S Wilson.\nWork of the volunteers had been severely disrupted over the winter due to the discovery of RAAC concrete in the building and the complete and subsequent partial closure of the library. We are currently looking for volunteers to fill two specialist roles in digital archiving and copy typing.\nTwo new members have been co-opted onto the committee: Barbara Light and Martin Turnbull (MT).\nMT’s book co-authored with John Tennant featuring historic photographs of Saffron Walden had sold well and proceeds from the sale are divided between the Gibson Library and Saffron Walden Museum; we have already received the first tranche of money from this source.\nME had one downside to report\, the decision by the former Society secretary Gillian Williamson to step down from the committee following this AGM\, although she has offered to continue her involvement in some projects. GW had done a huge amount of work\, not just as the secretary\, but also organising exhibitions\, helping to identify people featured in local photographs\, acting as the “Readers’ Champion”\, maintaining records of users/visitors to the Study Room\, and a wide range of other important tasks. He expressed his deep gratitude to GW and requested a round of applause from all present for her contribution.\nME noted that wider cultural changes in society suggest that the Society will have to adapt to new ways of reaching out to and engaging the support of the community in Saffron Walden and beyond. He expressed his intention to be addressing these with the committee and Society members in the coming year.\nThe forthcoming book by Clare Mulley about the Gibson Library is making progress.\nME concluded by thanking all the committee and members for their support and contribution to the Gibson Library over the past twelve months.\nOne question came from John Oswin-Smith regarding the schedule for outstanding corrections to complete the removal of RAAC from the building. Clive Arrmitage (CA) from ECC did not have those details to hand but would keep the Society informed of any news or developments.\nThere being no further questions\, the report was taken as read and accepted.\nProposed: Howard Newman         Seconded: Peter Walker         Unanimously agreed. \n4. Treasurer’s Report:\nThe report and accounts for 01.04.2023 to 31.03.2024 had been posted on the website. Peter Walker (PW) drew particular attention to the following:\nIncome had risen by 14%.\nInterest rates had increased to 6.25% and the Society had benefitted from advantageous rates on its account with the Saffron Walden Building Society. This had resulted in our income for the past year being considerably higher than the previous twelve months.\nThere have been costs of £3\,295 for the forthcoming book on the Library. In addition we would normally have incurred expenditure for book-binding but this had not been spent so far this year.\nThere is an overall surplus on income over expenditure of £1\,523.\nThe accounts had been examined and confirmed by the Independent Examiner\, John Oswin Smith (JOS)\, who was thanked\, and were accepted:\nProposed: Kelly Cole         Seconded: Zofia Everett         Unanimously agreed.\nME thanked PW for his continued work on the accounts. He also thanked JOS for his support and for helping PW in preparing and completing the accounts in a very short time frame. \n5. Libraria’s Report: \nThere was no report as such to present but ME was pleased to welcome to the meeting two newly appointed ‘ECC Library Managers\, Clive Armitage\, Area Manager and Matthew Haydon\, Team Leader covering Saffron Walden and surrounding libraries. \nAddressing the meeting Clive Armitage thanked ME for having the opportunity to meet the Society’s members. He said that he had been in post for seven weeks and he had already visited the Gibson and County Libraries and had met with ME and Saffron Walden managers and teams. He is based at Chelmsford and his area covers 20 of the 74 libraries in Essex. He said that the county service had recently undergone a significant restructuring and it was working towards the delivery of the new Library Plan by 2026 to ensure the service remains relevant and well used across Essex. He stressed that he would ensure communication with the Gibson Library would be better and he emphasised that he and ECC would continue to support our work and aims. \nMatthew Haydon noted that he had been in post for a shorter time than CA\, just 14 days. Like CA he came direct from a career in retail management rather than a library or public sector background. He too had already visited the Libraries and had been greatly impressed by the GL and its extensive collection. He was already engaging with the teams at Saffron Walden to improve on what he described as “this great asset”. He was looking to find ways to reach the potential of the library service much more effectively and to get across to all residents and users than they have a tremendous local resource on their doorstep. He emphasised that the work and and commitment of GL volunteers should be fully acknowledged and continue to be supported by ECC. He thanked Sarah Turpin of the County Library and the GL Society and its volunteers for their welcome and he looked forward to working with us. \nME was pleased to note that the attendance of CA and MH at a Society AGM was the first for many years by any representatives from the county service. He thanked them for their attendance and supportive approach and he in turn looks forward to working with them. \n6. Election of Officers and Committee of the Society: \nElection of President: BM had confirmed his willingness to cntinue in the post.\nNominated: Martyn Everett           Seconded: Martin Turnbull           Unanimously agreed. \ni) Election of Chairman: BM took the Chair for the election of the Chairman\, ME having confirmed his willingness to continue in the post. He thanked ME\, the officers and committee for their roles in the continued success of the GL.\nNominated: Howard Newman           Seconded: Gaia Shaw           Unanimously agreed. \nii) Election of Treasurer: ME resumed the Chair. Peter Walker confirmed his willingness to continue in the post.\nNominated: Pat Gregory           Seconded: Charles Reese           Unanimously agreed. \niii) Election of Secretary: Ian Willard confirmed his willingness to continue in the post.\nNominated: Zofia Everett           Seconded: Anna Martin           Unanimously agreed. \niv) Election of current committee members:\nAll committee members with the exception of Gillian Williamson confirmed their willingness to continue in post and were re-elected en bloc: Kelly Cole\, Ben Cowell\, Pat Gregory\, Howard Newman\, Ljiljana Ortolja-Baird\, Charles Reese and Bruce Tice.\nNominated: Gillian Mulley           Seconded: Carolyn Wingfield           Unanimously agreed. \nv) Independent Examiner: John Oswin Smith confirmed his willingness to continue in the post.\nProposed: Martin Everett           Seconded: Peter Walker           Unanimously agreed. \n7. Any Other Business:\nThere being no other business the meeting was closed at 8.00 pm.

Chairman’s Report: : Martyn Everett’s (ME) report had been posted on the website. He highlighted to the AGM:\n(i) The importance of volunteers’ and committee members’ work for the Gibson Library (GL)\, especially Richard Woods\, Margaret Graves\, Peter Walker\, Charles Reese\, Kelly Cole and Martin Turnbull\, thanking these and others.\n(ii) Committee member Kelly Cole’s work on grant applications. \nThere being no questions\, the report was taken as read and accepted:\nProposed: Kelly Cole           Seconded: Bruce Tice           Unanimously agreed. \n4. Treasurer’s Report: The report and accounts for 01.04.2022 to 31.03.2023 had been posted on the website and were shared on-screen. Peter Walker (PW) drew particular attention to the following:\n(i) There was a slight growth in membership\, with an income of £1\,010.\n(ii) Grants for capital expenditure produced an inflow and outflow of monies. A major item had been the new microfiche reader.\n(iii) Interest received had risen due to a rise in interest rates.\n(iv) The liabilities of £2\,700 were mainly attributable to the new book on the library which was a work-in-progress.\n(v) As the year showed a surplus of £1\,713 there is no need to increase the membership subscription rate.\nThe accounts had been examined and confirmed by the Independent Examiner\, John Osmin Smith (JOS)\, who was thanked\, and were accepted. \nProposed: John Oswin Smith           Seconded: Pat Gregory           Unanimously agreed.\nME thanked PW for his continued work on the accounts. \n5. Librarian’s Report: The report\, prepared by Jonothon Weston Cole\, ECC\, was circulated.\nME noted:\n(i) That the GL was not yet lending books through the new consortium as there were insufficient guarantees of compensation for any stock losses arising.\n(ii) He welcomed the establishment of an ECC sub-committee with a clear chain of command to take on the role of trustee of the library.\n(iii) Sarah Turpin had passed her apprenticeship and her work would result in better working between Saffron Walden Library and the GL. \nAnna Martin queried the need for manual work to correct problems on moving to the new catalogue which should have been corrected by the contractor. ME replied that this had proved the most timely way of unravelling the issue. \nThe meeting voted to accept the report:\nProposed: Charles Reese         Seconded: Kelly Cole         Unanimously agreed. \n6. Election of Officers and Committee of the Society: \nElection of President: BM had confirmed his willingness to cntinue in the post.\nNominated: Martyn Everett           Seconded: Peter Walker           Unanimously agreed. \ni) Election of Chairman: BM took the Chair for the election of the Chairman\, ME having confirmed his willingness to continue in the post. Ian Willard was willing to be nominated to the office.\nNominated: Martyn Everett           Seconded: Anna Martin           Unanimously agreed. \niv) Election of current committee members:\nBarbara Hughes had been ill during the year and was therefore standing down\, with the option to be co-opted on recovery. All other committee members and Gillian Williamson confirmed their willingness to continue in post and were re-elected en bloc: Kelly Cole\, Ben Cowell\, Pat Gregory\, Howard Newman\, Ljiljana Ortolja-Baird\, Charles Reese\, Bruce Tice and Gillian Williamson.\nNominated: Martyn Everett           Seconded: Peter Walker           Unanimously agreed. \nv) Independent Examiner: John Oswin Smith confirmed his willingness to continue in the post.\nProposed: Gillian Williamson           Seconded: Kelly Cole           Unanimously agreed. \n7. Any Other Business:\ni) BC thanked GW for her work as Secretary which ME seconded. \nii) Gill Mulley asked whether plans were in place for deputising for ME as Chair\, given the important\, wide-ranging nature of the role. ME replied that the role required understanding of the Society\, the Charitable Trust and ECC Libraries. There had been some reshaping of committee responsibilities to better support the Chair and he was always ready to delegate tasks. He invited members to come forward if they were interested in helping. \nThere being no other business the meeting was closed at 8.040 pm.
