Maps of Essex and other areas

The Library has been given various individual maps over the last 150 years, some of which are listed below.

John Cary & W Smith	Geological Map of Essex	1824	Famous geological map, coloured. Backed on linen; split on seams. Black lines drawn on map, and a manuscript listing of 8 area letter codes; the lines correspond to the recording areas used in Gibson’s Flora of Essex, 1862 (item LM07 below).	LM01
RK Dawson	Proposed Parliamentary Divisions and Polling Places in Essex	1832	Robt K Dawson Lieut RE created county maps showing the new Parliamentary Divisions (north & south in Essex) and where elections were held. Engraved by J Gardner, 163 Regent Street.	LM04
Mechanics Magazine	The Mechanics Magazine Metropolitan Railway Map	1838	Published Decr 13 1838 by WA Robertson, 6 Peterborough Court, London. Drawn & Litho by JR Jobbins, Warwick Ct, Holborn. Vol XXIX. Has Eastern Counties Railway going all the way into Bishopsgate, where also starts Cambridge Railway going due north to Tottenham & beyond.	LM28
Anon (based on Ebden)	Essex	c1845	William Robson & Co, Directory Office London. Hundreds listed in alphabetic order & numbered; Parochial Unions edge-bound by very schematic red lines, with Index list in bottom left using letters. Explanation list similar to Ebden, but has Railway. Railways shown past Colchester into Suffolk, from Roydon into Cambridgeshire, and from Romford to (unnamed) Thames Haven.	LM05
Moule	Essex	1849	Uncoloured. Railway lines up to Sudbury (opened 1849), Braintree and Maldon (1848).	LM15
J&C Walker	Essex	1853	Uncoloured. Railway line shown open out to Tilbury but no further (authorised/opened 1852/54); Romford to Thames Haven shown faintly; Harwich line shown authorised (1847/54), plus Chapel to Halsted (1856/60) and lines north of Sudbury (1847/60); Newmarket line shown built, and Cambridge line only as authorised. Hundreds edge-coloured; 14 Polling Places.	LM14
Ebden / Stanford	New Map of the County of Essex; Divided into Hundreds. Containing the District Divisions and other Local Arrangements.	1860	Taken from Gibson’s Flora of Essex, 1862, with the 8 recording areas used by Gibson to analyse the distribution of plants within the county. Railway lines up to and including Chapel to Halsted (opened 1860). The table of Hundreds is still present with their numbers, and Hundreds’ numbers are still on the map itself. The Explanation table now has Railways (in a different font and size from other legends).	LM07
Ebden / Stanford	New Map of the County of Essex; Divided into Hundreds. Containing the District Divisions and other Local Arrangements.	1860	Same as LM07 above, but without the Botanical areas. Railway lines up to and including Chapel to Halsted (opened 1860). The table of Hundreds is still present with their numbers, and Hundreds’ numbers are still on the map itself. Stanford	A New Map of Metropolitan Railways & Miscellaneous Improvements.	1863	Shows existing lines to 1863, plus all the proposed additional tracks deposited for the 1864 session. There are a vast number of proposed new tracks, very few of which were built.	LM30
James Wyld	Wyld’s New Map of the Proposed Railways & Improvements for Session 1866	1866	Shows existing lines to 1865 (?), plus all the proposed additional tracks deposited for the 1866 session. There are now only a few proposed new tracks.	LM31
Jarrolds	Jarrolds’ Map of Essex	c1920	Folding map in covers, that has Thaxted branch (opened 1913) but not Southend Arterial (1924), and with advert for Marching Chocolate that gives estimated date.	LM20
