Maps

Most of the county maps in the Gibson Library are within Atlases or Gazetteers, but there are plenty of other maps to see. The individual maps in the Library fall into three groups:

Large scale maps of Saffron Walden and the villages around it – see below.
A large set of one inch Old Series maps, 1831 to 1860 – almost every “Old Series” map for the whole of England and Wales is here.
A variety of maps of Essex and other areas in Britain, from 1645 to 1920, including geological, Parliamentary and railway maps .

We have a copy of the oldest map of Walden (1758), plus local enclosure maps and a huge number of large scale maps of Walden and the surrounding areas produced by the Ordnance Survey from the 1870s to the 1970s.

The early maps below (except Nockold’s Wendens Ambo map) are held in the Reading Room in a set of large map folders located on the floor at the right hand end of the windows, whilst the OS ones are in map chests/tanks on the first floor of the County Library.
