David Pearson has recently distilled the fruits of many years of research into bindings into two books, Cambridge Bookbinding 1450-1770 (2023) and Bookbindings: an illustrated history (2026). In this illustrated talk he will set out what we can learn from bindings and the questions we should put to them, drawing on his books and also on examples to be found in the Gibson Library.
